Purification recovery >95%: the number that sets your exosome unit cost

"Recovery >95%" looks like a spec-sheet boast. It is the number that sets exosome unit economics. — because purification is estimated at 40%+ of total production cost, and every point of recovery is product you already paid to grow.

The upstream math

Industry yields run 1–10 mg of exosome per liter of culture — a narrow band that makes recovery efficiency the difference between a viable program and an expensive demonstration. The pain is documented in process surveys: a third of laboratories report difficulty with high-purity extraction, 33% report poor reproducibility from ultracentrifugation and precipitation, and over a quarter of clinical studies have been affected by inconsistent vesicle concentrations. Purification is both the cost center and the consistency bottleneck. Recovery decides whether the program is viable.

The storage half of the equation

Unit economics do not end at fill. Liquid EV storage is a silent write-off: conventional −80 °C liquid stock can lose most of its measurable concentration within months, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles destroy vesicle membranes irreversibly. A program that recovers 95% at purification and then warehouses liquid inventory for a year has simply moved its losses downstream.

LeverEffect on delivered cost
Purification recovery >95%Less culture input per sellable unit — the 40% cost line shrinks
Lyophilized format2–8 °C stability measured in years (sample-batch data); no dry-ice dependency
Pilot on the production lineNo throwaway validation batch amortized into your first PO
Batch records at releaseNo re-test limbo holding paid inventory

The cheap-quote trap

The market's low end proves the point by subtraction: bargain OEM pricing is achievable by omitting microbial challenge testing and stability studies — costs that reappear as your recall. A real quotation prices the recovery figure, the storage window and the documentation; a fake one prices only the vial.
