Flask vs. Closed Micro-Batch Line: Pricing a 500-Unit Exosome Pilot

Every emerging exosome brand hits the same wall: culture-flask workflows can't make a 500-unit pilot profitable, and big-batch CDMOs won't quote one. The capacity equation behind that wall decides what your launch looks like.

How flasks scale. Flask workflows add capacity by adding footprint, flasks and hands. Every batch is an aggregation of hundreds of manual operations, each a contamination and consistency risk; batch records are assembled after the fact. Scaling up means scaling everything — including the variability.

How closed micro-batch lines scale. A fully enclosed 0.5–5 L line scales by program count: changeovers re-qualify in hours, culture and purification parameters are logged inside the sealed system, and batch records are generated at release, not assembled afterward. Utilization stays high across many small programs because the line was designed for changeovers, not campaign volume.

The buyer's takeaway. Ask a supplier how a 500-unit pilot is priced and scheduled. If the answer involves amortization language or a "minimum campaign," the line behind it was not built for small batch. If the pilot runs on the same validated line as production — with the same QC panel and the same records — you are looking at a platform designed for brands at your stage.

That is the equation: flasks scale product; closed micro-batch lines scale programs.
